I usually consider my favorite octopus species to be whichever is in residence at the time of the question. Each has something special and endearing. Currently housing two briareus and one hummelincki, I will give a slight edge to Octopus hummelincki (also known as filosus) because it has so many attributes that make it an outstanding home aquarium companion. It is a warm water species, small enough not to crowd a 55 gallon tank, has a full array of color/pattern changes and is naturally curious/friendly toward humans. If it was a large egged species, it would be the perfect home aquarist animal and could be tank raised instead of wild caught. Unfortunately, the small egg size and accompanying pelagic stage make it impossible to culture.

Since you have not done a write up on this Caribbean species yet, it would also be my request for something else to add to your blog research page.

Oh, and more jewelry is always in fashion ;>)

I love the octopus related apparel posts. Some of the designs are really cool.

Enteroctopus dofleini is my favorite because I did husbandry for one at a Marine Science Center in high school. Rambunctious and smart, he frequently broke out of his tank, ate fish in another tank, and returned during the night.

I love marine creature watercolor art and would be delighted to see prints available.

My favorite octopod is the Giant Pacific Octopus (Enteroctopus dofleini) because they were the first cephelopods that I was introduced to as a child.

As for where I'd like to see an octopus image appear -- window decals, kitchen pudding bowls, and bath rugs. :)

I'm an enthusiastic devotee of Cthuhul: He who lies "dead but dreaming" in the city of R'lyeh, a place of non-Euclidean madness presently (and mercifully) sunken below the depths of the Pacific Ocean.

I'm a sucker for blue-ringed octopus, because anything that precisely wicked and gorgeous just makes me grin.

Earrings, more earrings! I've photographed someone's octopus art-car in Berkeley, so that's covered... a hooded octoscarf would be nifty too.

Unknown said...

I have to say the blue ringed octopus is my favorite, because of it coloring. I actualy like other cephalopods even better than octopi, particularly the chambered nautilusand the cuttlefish. The former becauce ot its mathmaticaly perfect shell and the latter because of its extrordanary color changing abilities. I would like to see more cephalopods pretty much everywhere.

It's not an octopus, but I'm a fan of architeuthis, the giant squid. They're just so darned mysterious. Got corn cob holders yet?

My favorite is Thaumoctopus mimicus the shape-shifting "mimic" octopus, because it blew me away the first time I saw footage of it in action. Hadn't really thought about until now, but my kids would really like octopus stuffed animals, I suppose!

I like the blue ringed octopus because he reminds me of a paisley shirt I once had. Great shirt, great octopus! I would like to see more octopus hats, because you can't have enough hats. And the tentacles protect you from mind control rays.

I am 172turtleATgmailDOTcom because I like turtles too!

There's a lot of thoughtful commentary on this thread, so I'll be the first to say, ME WANTY. That ornament is FANTASTIC.

Now that I've gotten my naked greed out of the way, I'll say that my favorite octopus is not a species but an individual - Otto, the octopus at the Sea Star Aquarium in Germany who routinely wreaks havoc on his keepers and his fellow aquarium occupants. I've tried and tried to find out what species Otto is, but alas, I can't find the info... I do know, however, that any octopus that juggles hermit crabs and short-circuits lights for fun is definitely a favorite of mine.

Octopus chocolate, you can't have too much chocolate! Not flavoured you understand, just shaped!

dwhatley, you can keep octopus in aquariums? Really? Don't they eat all the other occupants?

My favorite is the Red Octopus (Octopus rubescens). Like me, they're natives of the Puget Sound region. Also like me, they're quite fond of beer bottles, although they prefer theirs empty and I prefer mine full (at least to start with).

They're cute, they're cuddly and, gosh darn it, people like them!

Sorry--I forgot to add:

I'd love to see more octopus figurines. I'd love to decorate my home with them. Good, full-color photos/posters of them would be great, too. And octopus hats; the world needs more octopus hats. I think it would contribute to world peace.

Has to be the Mimic Octopus! The Octpus that can pass itself off as other species - I have a recurring fantasy of highly evolved Octopuses living among us, mimicking humans so perfectly as to be undetectable, forever watching us with their fabulous Cephalopod intelligence. If the Octopuses had solved the problems of longevity and blood circulation, then humans wouldn't be the only civilisation on the planet, and Octopuses would be telling their children scary tales of these peculiar dangerous non-tentacled beings living beyond the sea.

My favorite Octopus is the Bimac. I had 1 as a pet a year ago, I just wish they had a longer lifespan. His name was Admiral Nelson and he even has a youtube video of him trying to get to a shrimp that is under a glass mug I put in there. Just search octopus and Admiral Nelson to find it. They are my favorite because of how friendly and curious they are, and they don't grow large enough to be a big problem. I miss my Octopus :(

My favorite species of octopus is definitely the Red octopus. I collect for and care for a small educational aquarium, and the Red's are so charismatic and crafty. The do an excellent job of blending in perfectly to their surroundings but also "show off" and make themselves blatantly obvious. Curious creatures that make it simple to teach curious minds about them. They're also mildly venomous, which certainly earns cool points!

My favorite is also the blue-ringed octopus. When my dad joined the navy, I was 15, and we were immediately sent off to Okinawa. Once there we were given a "Welcome To Okinawa!" booklet that had, among other things, a pictorial list of ALL THE CRITTERS THERE THAT WOULD KILL YOU. The cutest by far was the little blue-ringed octopus; the others were just snakes and fish and jellyfish and molluscs and the like.

I'd like to see octopus hats. I went to the city aquarium last month, and saw a plate-sized plushie octopus toy. Holding it gave me a very strong compulsion to buy it and wear it as a hat. Unfortunately, I was a bit short of funds.

I have a very hard time picking my favorite, since I am a huge fan of them all, however, if I must pick I will pick Vampyroteuthis infernalis. While it's name translates to "Vampire squid from hell", it is not neccessarily a squid. Since it had much in common with both the Octopus and the Squid, the powers that be gave it it's own Order: Vampyromorphida.

Blue-ringed octopus. It's small, cute, and since it lives around Australia, it's bloody lethal.

I'm going to have to go with the Red octopus, as it matches my favorite color. Though there are few cephalopods that don't interest me...

It's pretty standard, I suppose, but my favorite will always be the Giant Pacific Octopus. It's the one I think of when I think of octopi. I even used to have a neat little toy version of it that made what was claimed to be an "octopus sound" when you pressed a button. I guess, man. They could've used any sound and I wouldn't have known the difference.

With that in mind, I'd like to see more octopus toys, but a very specific kind that'll probably never happen: little dioramas, with a toy octopus in an underwater setting. I love little microcosms like that.

My favorite octopus is one I would ofter encounter tide-pooling or scuba diving off Malibu, California, the Red Octopus octopus rubescens . I kept a small female for about a year in an aquarium. She presented us with a clutch of eggs and guarded them vigilantly for over 3 months until one day I came in and found that she had expired, still near her eggs. I loved that little gal.

She taught me much about octopus behavior. She shared her tank with a few juvenile Opaleye perch girella nigricans. Once in a while, one of the Opaleyes would take a nip at the end of one of her tenticles, to which she would respond with a blast of her syphon tube. Her color changes when she was thus irritated were amazing.

I came home from school one day to find one of the Opaleyes dead on the floor in front of the aquarium. I had no explanation for the occurrence until the next day when I returned home to find my little octopus in the process of hurling one of the remaining Opaleyes out of the aquarium. She had climbed to the surface and had lifted up one of the glass plates that formed the top of the aquarium, using several arms and a portion of her body. She had one of the Opaleyes in the secure grip of two or three of her other arms and was, I believe to this day, intending to hurl the poor fish to its doom, just like the day before. When she saw me come in, she released the fish and floated back down to her home in a little cavern I built for her with some shells and tide-pool rocks. Needless to say, the remaining Opaleyes were removed from her tank.

It was not long after these events took place, that she laid her eggs.

I would love to have a little model octopus to prop here on top of my monitor to remind me of the fondness I share for my little red octopus, and Octopi in general.

Unknown said...

Caribbean Reef Octopus, definitely. First off, love blue. Secondly, it reminds me of Eeyore. The Mimic Octopus is just astounding though. Videos of these never get tiring.

I love the picture of the Dumbo Octopus expanding its arms. I looks like one of the ladies from Gone with the Wind, ever so flirtatiously raising her dress. I almost want to slap it for being such a tart, exposing its undercarriage like that. Cheeky little octopus.

I so want that Christmas ornament! I've always been attracted to the shiny and quirky.

Unknown said...

My favorite octopus is the mimic octopus. I've always admired species that mimic just ONE other animal, as opposed to six or seven or eight. (I like eight to stop. Eight is a number we're all comfortable with here.)

As for octopus related products, I wouldn't mind seeing octopi artistically arranged in clothing or as cute cuddly little stuffed octopi, with suckers that don't hurt and everything.

And just to be safe, alkuna[at]gmail[dot]com

1) Done!

2) Definitely the Mimic Octopus - not only does it do all of the cool things cephalopods normally do, but it also mimics other creatures! It truly is a master of disguise. Who knows, there may even be ones walking among us - I wouldn't put it past them, you know.

3) An octopus hat would be cool - or perhaps a Cthulhu-styled face-mask... anything to show my allegiance to our Tentacled Overlords.

Although my favorite is the Atlantic Pygmy Octopus, I'd like to see more octopuses in movies attacking a major city. It doesn't have to be Tokyo; maybe mutant Pacific Giants can attack San Francisco. My favorite is Octopus paxarbolis. There is none cooler.

I'd like to see a xmas tree ornament of the elusive paxarbolis. It just seems natural.

I would say my favourite octopus is also the Atlantic pygmy - because I am a fan of very small things! (My favourite cat would be the cod-cod of S. America - very tiny!) Things in miniature always earn cool points!

Someone above said they'd love to see more squid ornaments, and I'd have to second that!

I am a follower of all things unusual in nature (yes, and things weird)and while the Dumbo (I also always liked the idea of flying elephants) has a lot going for it, my current favorite is Megaleledone setebos, I don't know if it has a common name, but this baby one is quite remarkable. Not only does it live in Antarctica, not a place i would hace guessed for and octo, but if the accompanying details are correct it makes some remarkable journeys and is the founder of many other type of octi.
see http://www.newscientist.com/gallery/censusofmarinelife2008/7

I would definitely like to see octo underwear, socks and hats.
